I used game bred pits for a long time. I thought that was the only way until I got the American bulldog I have now. I will never go back to pits. He is so much easier to handle, I dont have to break him off.

Im not trying to argue here muleman, but wouldn't you having to break a catch dog off be better! I would rather have a dog sure enough not let go when the going get tough, than have one you cant trust!

If that were the only option I would say yes. But I have found with my AB that you can have it all. a dog that will not let go under any circumstances until I grab his collar and tell him out, then I can leash him to a tree and he doesnt stand there barking and raising hell. Load him in the truck with a bunch of fussy curs without being worried about him fighting. He catches as hard as any catchdog I have ever been to the woods with and when you go to him you can see him watching you while he's caught. When he is caught with my buddy's AB you can watch them turn the hogs head away from you as you come into them. She is the same way as mine and they are not related. they seem to "handle the hog without killing it being the main goal.

Now, dont get me wrong I have seen, and owned some awsome pit catchdogs. When I was young thats all I would have. I have not been with any other ABs besides mine and my buddy's so I dont know if we just squirreled into two good ones or not. We even bred the two because of how good they both are.

I know what you mean but we have a line of pit that does it all with a good attitude and not all of the off the hook dog aggression.

can you tap them on the nose and tell them "out" and they will turn it off? if so, stick with em. You have the exception. that means that you have successfully bred out traits that people have been breeding in for hundreds of years. That means you have created.....american bulldogs!! I'm playing but ABs have been bred to catch and for the most part not fight. I love how they handle hogs. But thats why there are so many breeds to suit everyone's preference. Everyone raves about Dogos too but I dont get it.

I use a dogo/abx as a catch dog imo they have more sense than a pit and bigger lung capacity

I have not seen that cross in action but seems like a good one to me.

this is the first time ive used it as well my gyp is 15 months and catches like a freight train she is supposed to be 3/4dogo 1/4 ab

thats great! I love a catch dog that does it right. I have personally not had a terrible time with the heat with my AB. he seems to be taking it well. and way better than the pits I have hunted with.

The lung capacity is something I feel is in the overall correctness of the dog. If you get any of them overdone you will have issues with their soundness. A properly built pit has lungs for days. Think about it that's what they are built for. That and their wrestling ability. I know what you mean muleman. Alot of pits are so inbred with one purpose in mind that all they want to do is fight whatever. However, I have bred up a line that functions without the aggressiveness, has a wonderful temperment, is not hyper and gets it down without the bs. I like an average size dog not a huge dog. Thats why I stick with the pits. They can move around in brush a lot better.

I agree. I have had many a pit with good lungs and my AB seems to have no problems.

PIT OR PIT CROSS

I THINK PITS ARE BEST FOR ANY SITUATION TO ME THEIR THE TOP OF THE CAHIN WHEN IT COMES TO DOGS THEY WANT TO PLEASE THEIR OWNER MORE THAN ANY OTHER DOG...TELL ME ANOTHER BREED MORE LOYAL THAN A PIT AND THAT WANTS TO PLEASE HIS OWNER MORE

From what I've seen the pits and american's are both great CD's, and I know of one american/catahoula cross thats unstoppable!!!!! As far as bay dog I've seen many hounds as well as curs that were good, its mainly personal preference and training along with bloodline.

If pits were perfect, and only wanted to please their master, there wouldnt be so many pit owners carrying break sticks on their belt. the dog would release when it was told. Thats what pleases me. You would also be able to cram them in the box with a bunch of other dogs and not worry. There are individuals probably that will do both but they are the exception. Please dont think I am anti pit. I am in awe of their power and gameness. But they are far from the perfect dog.

Ain't that the truth, unfortunatly perfection doesn't exist, heck there's not even any to even base it on. I've been lucky my red nose releases when I say "caught hog" and my american pup has done so as well.

Like I said, there are individuals out there. and some may even breed lines that consistently produce those types of dogs. I have seen some AWSOME pit catch dogs. and have owned a couple. but I am really digging this AB

Well as it was said, pits are great CD but when it comes to baying I love to hear a good hound, the sound of one when they get in there good in bay is unbelievable. But I have to say I like my curs too.

A good quality Pit is hard to beat, no doubt, there are so many aout there that are not of the caliber to do the job as a specialist though and that is why there are so many different types, to please the different types of people. I have had a couple of really good Pits, but if I have to choose then I am going to pick the dog that works best for me as an individual.
When you find something you like you stick with it!

I have AB/Dogo crosses and bred down a couple of generations to be exactly what I want in a dog. I also have one male pit that fits into our program of being an all around dog.
Most pits just breathe heavier and are way to high strung to fit our program, even with tons of training and behavior modification, they don't perform to my standards. They catching ability is not in question at all, but the small details that make one a pleasure to handle in the tense situations is what makes the difference in my opinion.

As far as a bay dog goes, I am also very particular about the details, and crossbred dogs line bred to perform tasks to my preferences are what works best for me, can't name a specific breed, because I don't look at whats on the outside but rather what job the dogs do and how well they do it.
